FEATURED EDUCATION
Research into the gut–skin axis is developing. Here’s a balanced starting point for understanding the topic.
Your gut is home to a community of microbes, known as the gut microbiome. Researchers are studying how these microbes and the substances they produce may interact with the immune system and influence different parts of the body, including the skin. This relationship is often called the gut–skin axis.
Studies have explored possible links between the gut microbiome and skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. However, evidence is still developing, and there is more to learn about how these connections work in people.
Skin changes can have many influences, including age, hormones, genetics, sun exposure, stress, skincare and general health. A breakout or dry patch does not prove that something is wrong with your gut.
Consider sustainable habits such as eating a variety of foods including vegetables, fruit, legumes and whole grains; drinking enough water for your needs; moving regularly; and making space for sleep and stress management. These habits support general wellbeing, but they are not a treatment for a skin condition.
The gut–skin axis is an active area of research, not a shortcut or a promise of perfect skin. If you have a persistent, painful or changing skin concern, speak with your GP or a dermatologist rather than assuming it is caused by your gut.
